The famous Abbey of San Galgano, roofless and in ruins, is one of Italy’s most atmospheric monasteries. Its timeless allure is immediate. The story dates back to the 12th century, when Galgano Guidotti, a noble knight, renounced worldly life to become a hermit. Nearby is the Hermitage of Montesiepi, where a legendary relic can be found: the Sword in the Stone, embedded by Saint Galgano as a symbol of peace.
